Frequently asked questions
BMR is energy at rest; TDEE adds everything you do during the day. The activity rows show TDEE estimates.
What your basal metabolic rate means
Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body needs to keep breathing, circulating blood and maintaining temperature while at rest. It typically accounts for 60% to 70% of the calories you burn in a day.
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which studies have found to be among the most accurate for most adults. Multiplying BMR by an activity factor gives your total daily energy expenditure — a starting point for maintaining, losing or gaining weight.
Results are estimates. Muscle mass, genetics, medication and health conditions all change real energy needs. For medical or nutritional decisions, consult a professional.
