Roofing Calculator
Find the real roof area, not just the footprint. Enter length, width and pitch to get the surface area and roofing squares needed.
How it works
- 1
Enter footprint dimensions
Length and width as measured from the ground or plans.
- 2
Choose the pitch
The rise per 12 inches of run, like 6/12.
- 3
Get the roof area
Actual surface area and squares (100 sq ft units) needed.

Frequently asked questions
The vertical rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run, written as rise/12, like 6/12.
Why roof area is bigger than the footprint
A sloped roof has more surface area than its footprint because the slope adds length. The calculator multiplies the footprint area by a pitch factor based on the rise-over-run ratio to find the true surface.
Roofing materials like shingles are sold by the “square,” equal to 100 square feet, so the result is also shown in squares to help you order the right amount.
