Frequently asked questions
Withdrawing 4% of the portfolio in the first year and adjusting for inflation historically lasted about 30 years in most scenarios.
How the FIRE number is calculated
Your FIRE number is annual expenses divided by the safe withdrawal rate. With 40,000 of yearly expenses and a 4% rate you need 1,000,000 invested. The calculator then projects your portfolio year by year until it reaches that target.
The 4% rule comes from historical US market studies over 30-year retirements; for longer early retirements many people use 3–3.5%. Returns are not guaranteed and inflation matters, so treat the result as an estimate, not financial advice.
